Float: A Maglev "Floating" Light

Illuminating the Beauty of Slow Design

Inspired by Zen and the concept of slow design, Guangpeng Yue has created Float, a unique lamp that allows users to slow down and experience the beauty of life. With its magnetic levitation technology and interactive features, Float creates a Zen atmosphere and promotes mindfulness.

Float is not just an ordinary lamp; it is a design that encourages users to embrace a slower pace of life. The concept behind Float is to provide a serene and calming experience, allowing users to reach a state of mindfulness. The combination of the static base and the rotating float creates a unique atmosphere reminiscent of Zen.

One of the key features of Float is its interactive mode. Users can turn on the lamp by simply rotating the magnetic suspension knob. This interactive feature gives users a sense of mental flow, enhancing their overall experience. The float rotates at a uniform speed, creating a Buddhist mood and enabling users to achieve a state of full concentration.

The design of Float is minimalistic and incorporates green materials, reflecting the concept of Zen and advocating a return to nature. The lamp is made using polypropylene, aluminum, and durable white oak, ensuring both durability and sustainability.

Float comes in three different sizes: high, medium, and low. The high lamp measures 600mm in height and has a diameter of 220mm. The medium lamp is 287mm in height with a diameter of 155mm, while the low lamp is 100mm in height and has a diameter of 200mm.

Operating Float is simple and intuitive. The lamp is turned on by rotating the suspended object, and it turns off when the float stops rotating. The direction of rotation corresponds to the warm and cold light, creating a pleasant atmosphere that helps users focus better, especially during study or work sessions. The magnetic levitation technology adds a touch of science and technology to the lamp, making it both intriguing and visually appealing.

The Float project started in July 2021 at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, and was completed in October 2021. The design team, led by Guangpeng Yue, included Weizhi Cao, Hang Yin, Fengze Li, Songtao Zhang, Jinsheng Zhao, Yanlei Huang, Zixuan Meng, Jiayi Zhu, Xueqiang Zhang, Xiaolong Yin, Jiaqi Cui, and Yingyi Li.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was ensuring the stability of the float as it rotates. The magnetic levitation device made the overall center of gravity of the lamp unstable. To address this, the team increased the overall weight of the lamp and used aluminum material to make it durable, strong, and wear-resistant.

Float has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2022. This award is given to designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Float's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Float is not just a lamp; it is a design that embodies the essence of slow design and promotes mindfulness. With its magnetic levitation technology, interactive features, and minimalist design, Float illuminates not only spaces but also the beauty of a slower and more intentional way of living.
